Aged Feather
|
In-Game Description
An aged bird feather.
Return to last bonfire rested at.
Can be used repeatedly.
The child of the dragon, sequestered away
from the world, imagined a world of boundless
possibilities from the mere sight of a feather.
Use
Acts as a reusable homeward bone that will teleport you to the last bonfire you rested at.
Availability
Given to the player by the Emerald Herald upon reaching Dragon Aerie.
Dropped by the Emerald Herald on death.
Notes
- This item, along with the Darksign, Homeward Bones, and the Miracle Homeward will warp you back to the spawn gazebo in Things Betwixt if both the Fire Keeper's Dwelling in Things Betwixt and The Far Fire in Majula are unlit, potentially as a softlock prevention measure and/or a default warp location.
- Warping with a Homeward Bone / Aged Feather / Darksign / Homeward will not cause you to rest at the bonfire, but it will reset the world and all enemies as if you had.
- This means a Homeward Bone / Aged Feather / Darksign are safe to use during "no bonfire" runs, and Homeward is safe on NG+ "no bonfire" runs.
- Since all enemies will be restored and you will not be, you will usually want to immediately rest after using Homeward Bone / Aged Feather / Darksign / Homeward.
- Even if you avoid resting at bonfires or using Homeward Bone / Aged Feather / Darksign / Homeward, enemies can respawn if you get far enough away that an area is unloaded. This distance is much further than in Dark Souls. If you run from Majula to Vendrick at the end of Undead Crypt and then back, only Shaded Woods will have been reloaded - Shrine of Amana and Drangleic Castle will be the way you left them.
- Warping with a Homeward Bone / Aged Feather / Darksign / Homeward will cause any summon signs you placed to disappear, no matter how short the distance you warp.
- The Emerald Herald holds it when leveling you up, but you still cannot level up without using the Emerald Herald.

- No-man's Wharf: In the watery passage between Heide's Tower of Flame and No-man's Wharf in a room with a Basilisk, there's a petrified hollow blocking stairs. Use a Fragrant Branch of Yore to get past him and pick up the Estus Flask Shard on the corpse nearby.
- Huntsman's Copse: From the Undead Lockaway bonfire, clear the area and go to the dropped portcullis in the skeleton caves. You will find a Crystal Lizard and a corpse holding an Estus Flask Shard.
- The Gutter: in the area with the Heide Knight Lancer and chest with visible Aurous set, climb the long ladder upwards and the Shard will be at the top, on a corpse. It's near the zip-line.
Dark Souls 2 & Scholar of the First Sin:
- Majula: Next to the big gaping hole in the ground is a well with a large rock resting on the edge of it. Attacking the stone will cause a corpse holding the shard to be pulled up by the rope.
- Majula:Use the House Key to unlock the mansion. Once inside the house, head to the basement. Defeat the Skeleton and continue forward to find the shard on skeletal remains.
- The Lost Bastille: From the Exile Holding Cells bonfire, progress until you reach a ladder. Descend the ladder, exit the small room and follow the wall to the left. On the other side of the destructible wooden scaffolding there is a narrow path which leads around the building to a metal chest holding the shard. Alternatively, from the McDuff's Workshop bonfire, follow the wall around through the dogs until you reach the narrow path. The chest is visible from the McDuff's Workshop bonfire, through a crack in the wall.
- Shaded Woods: Use a Fragrant Branch of Yore to restore Rosabeth of Melfia to human form. After pulling the lever and entering the next room, the shard can be found inside a metal chest which lies in a room on the ground floor and right side of the stairs.
- Brightstone Cove Tseldora: Descend the stairs from the Chapel Threshold bonfire and continue until you reach the area overlooking the quick-sand sinkhole. Find the building with the Hollow Mage, two exploding barrels, and a corpse on top of the roof. That room contains the estus shard and there is more than one way to reach it. If you have high health, and/or fall-damage reduction gear/spells, a well timed jump can place you on the landing in front of the entrance to the room. Otherwise, ride the zip-line rope down once, then follow the rock face and drop down on the wooden beams and then onto the roof of the house. Carefully step from the edge of the roof to the landing in front of the doorway, and head inside to find the shard on a pile of bones.
- Drangleic Castle: From the Central Castle Drangleic bonfire, head down the hallway with the descending stairs. This path leads to a small circular room containing; a platform that will later rise, a locked door which leads to the Looking Glass Knight, and a ladder. Climb the ladder and enter the room containing seven Stone Soldiers and a large golem statue. Activate the golem by defeating an enemy in close proximity to it, and progress through the passage until you arrive at a large entryway decorated with numerous knight statues. From this grand entryway, head outside and down a set of stairs which leads to an armory room. Adjacent to the lever which activates the exit is a metal chest containing the estus shard.
- Shrine of Amana: From the Crumbled Ruins bonfire, progress until you encounter the Ogre enemy. Behind the Ogre is a series of pillars which indicate the path to the shard. Carrying a lit torch will make it much easier to navigate the treacherous pathway without falling to your death. The estus shard will be near the end of this pathway on a corpse behind a pillar, and just before the metal chest containing the Sunlight Blade Miracle.
Notes
- You'll only need to find a total of 11 shards to max out the flask's uses.
- After reaching 12 Estus Flasks the shards can still be obtained and show up in the inventory but are unusable. Trying to upgrade the flasks further will only show a dialog saying "Estus Flask at maximum strength".
- They can be sold to Lonesome Gavlan for 1,200 souls.

Estus Flask
|
In-Game Description
A green glass bottle of unknown make.
Fill it with Estus at a bonfire, and drink
from it to restore HP.
There is some kind of link between the Estus
Flasks and the bonfires that illuminate the
world of the Undead, but knowledge of this
has been long forgotten.
All that is known now is that this flask
remains a prized possession of the Undead.
Use
Drink from it to restore 550 HP (+1 = +50 HP) over about 3-5 seconds, replenish at bonfires.
Availability
Given by the Emerald Herald in Majula.
Notes
- Estus Flask Shards are be found across the world. They can be given to the Emerald Herald to gain one more flask up to a maximum of twelve flasks.
- The Far Fire Bonfire in Majula can be kindled with Sublime Bone Dust to increase the potency of each flask, with a maximum benefit of +5. Each Sublime Bone Dust slightly increases the rate of health recovery, and increases the restoration value by 50 HP, up to a maximum of 800 HP.
- The Adaptability stat increases the speed of the drinking animation.
- Wearing the Ancient Dragon Seal increases the healing of flasks by 50 HP.
- Reaching maximum strength and number of uses can be done in a single playthrough without the need of Bonfire Ascetics.

- In the lower part of the Bastille, where three dogs guard a gate at the base of a long staircase, which has an explosive barrel and a large enemy at its peak. Push the explosive barrel down the stairs to destroy the weakened wall to the left of the door, revealing a bonfire and the rear entrance to McDuff's smithy. - Unpetrify three enemies after the Shaded Ruins bonfire in Shaded Woods:

- In a broken building towards the boss, for the Lion Mage Set and another branch.
- Unpetrify the Ogre blocking the stairs in Aldia's Keep under the dragon skeleton.

One lion warrior is in a passageway off of the sandy arena of Manscorpion Tark, and the other is in a grassy area accessible by a jump to the left of the Shaded Runs bonfire on to a broken bridge below.

- Sinner's Rise: Right next to the Primal Bonfire in a chest after defeating The Lost Sinner
- Harvest Valley: One before the Mines bonfire, in the cave to the right of the ramp out of the first poison chasm

- Iron Keep: Buy one from Magerold of Lanafir for 7,500 souls
- The Gutter: Before the bonfire at Black Gulch
- Shaded Woods: Talk to Manscorpion Tark while wearing the Ring of Whispers to initiate his quest. Return after killing Scorpioness Najka to get the branch. Only the second conversation is necessary to receive the branch, though the first will enable his summon sign which may make the fight easier.
- Shaded Woods: One branch can be found in the ruins in the open area beyond the Shaded Ruins bonfire, opposite the two towers path which lead to the Scorpioness Najka boss fog. The entrance is blocked by a petrified enemy, so you need another branch to enter it. If you have a low equipment burden you can align yourself behind the chest and slightly to the right, then jump over the wall if you aim slightly right of the lowest section, but this is difficult to pull off. You will need to warp back to the bonfire to get out without using a branch. See (Note 2)

- Another can be retrieved in the metal chest containing the Lion Mage Set. Requires spending a Fragrant Branch of Yore to unpetrify the lion blocking the room with the chest. (This chest can be reached without using a Fragrant Branch via a very difficult jump over the break in the wall behind it [at least on PC], but the jump is extremely difficult to pull off since being patched.)
- Manscorpion Tark will give you one if you complete his quest (defeat the area boss). You have to wear the Ring of Whispers to talk to him.

Chest and Corpse Locations
- Five on a corpse by the Victor's Stone in Majula.
- Three on a corpse next to Benhart Of Jugo, between Majula and the Shaded Woods. The corpse holds three Lifegems as well.
- One on a corpse in the tunnel from Majula to Forest of Fallen Giants, in the water.

Enemy Drops

Notes
- This item, along with the Darksign, Aged Feather, and the Miracle Homeward will warp you back to the spawn gazebo in Things Betwixt if both the Fire Keeper's Dwelling in Things Betwixt and The Far Fire in Majula are unlit, potentially as a softlock prevention measure and/or a default warp location.

Loyce Soul
|
In-Game Description
Soul of the Knights of Loyce.
The Knights of Loyce were taken by Chaos,
and lost all sense of purpose and being.
The few woeful souls that trudged back home
were guided by some faint vestige of self.
This soul is pure sorrow,
and only Alsanna can put it to rest.
Availability
Dropped by Charred Loyce Knights.
Use
Collected for assessment by Alsanna, Silent Oracle, after The Burnt Ivory King is defeated, she will reward you depending on the number of held souls.
As you receive rewards, the two stairways leading up to Alsanna progressively open up. Once they are open and you have defeated Burnt Ivory King, Maughlin the Armourer will add the Ivory King Set to his inventory.
Rewards
Souls | Reward |
---|---|
5 | Loyce Gauntlets |
5 | Loyce Leggings |
15 | Loyce Armor |
35 | Loyce Helm |
50 | Soul of Alsanna, Silent Oracle |
Notes
- Placing souls in your item box or discarding them before talking to Alsanna still yields the appropriate reward depending on the total souls you owned.
- They do carry over into ng+.
- Consuming the souls gives nothing, so its better not to.
- Co-op phantoms can get these as a drop from the knights and with a MUCH HIGHER drop rate than as a host.
- The drop rate is staggeringly low
- After defeating the Burnt Ivory King and returning to the area, Charred Loyce Knights will respawn indefinitely from the three portals approximately every 2.5 minutes. They don't spawn indefinitely in Scholar of the First Sin (This can be fixed by joining the Company of Champions covenant).
- Seeing as you have to engage the Charred Loyce Knights solo after defeating the Burnt Ivory King it may be of greater benefit to farm these souls by repeating the boss fight to garner help from 4 - 6 allies (or even 7 in Scholar of the First Sin).

an imitation can be quite enough.
Use

Straid of Olaphis | Blinding Bolt | 10,000 |
Weaponsmith Ornifex | Dragonslayer Greatbow | 10,000 |
Consume | 75,000 souls | - |
Notes
- This Soul could be a reference to Lord Gwyn from the original Dark Souls. However, as the three other Great Souls acquired in NG+ are references to the Lord Souls from the original game, it could also be a reference to The Four Kings of New Londo. The fact that it can be traded for Blinding Bolt, the description of which mentions the "God of Sun", points more towards Gwyn.
- Without the awful English translation it's pretty clear that it's a reference to the sun's firstborn, same for "ichorous earth".

Petrified Egg
|
In Game Description
A large petrified egg.
Surely bears no life.
Eggs are vessels that harbor life itself,
and symbolize the deepest secrets of existence.
But what does a petrified egg harbor?
Use
Offer to Magerold of Lanafir to join the Dragon Remnants covenant.
Availability
Acquired from its hidden throne in Dragon Shrine. There will be an NPC invader named Dragonfang Villard who will attempt to stop you.
Notes
- If it's not given to Magerold it will remain in your inventory when going to NG+, making the Dragon Convenant available at an earlier point.
- If it's in your inventory, you'll be unable to use Magerold's services for that game cycle unless you give it to him (he'll keep asking if you give it to him, refusing him ends the dialogue).
- If you hold a Petrified Egg from an earlier game cycle, there won't be one at the Dragon Shrine even if you put the older one in your Bottomless Box. However, if you give your older Petrified Egg to Magerold, a new one will spawn at the usual spot. You can't give a second Petrified Egg to Magerold in the same game cycle.
- Taking the egg from the shrine does not aggro the Dragon Knights.

If enough poison builds up in the body
to break out and cause poisoning, your HP

If you wish to stay alive, you would do well
to keep a supply close to hand.
Use

Simpleton's Spice
|
In-Game Description
A spice exuding a peculiar aroma.
A spell demands devotion from its caster,
but using this spice makes a chosen spell
attainable with 1 less intelligence. Will only
work with assistance from a certain person.
The spice does not raise one's intelligence,
but only obfuscates the requirement.
Use
Lowers the required Intelligence level to cast a specific Sorcery or Hex by one. This is done through Magerold of Lanafir in Iron Keep through his Incense menu option.
Spells cannot be spiced to require lower than 10 Intelligence.
Availability

- Harvest Valley: in an alcove in the Artificial Undead ambush area.

Farming Guide
Belfry Sol
- Play offline to avoid being invaded by members of the Bell Keepers covenant.
- Use Bonfire Ascetics on the Belfry Sol bonfire to respawn the spices.
- One is located to the left of the door at the beginning of the area.
- One is located behind the tower with the ladder going up to the rooftop.
- One is located at the bottom of the rooftop, on the far right side (from the ladder going up to the rooftop).
Other items of note:
- The Mad Warrior may occasionally spawn near the second spice, and can be killed for his armor set.
- The Dual Avelyn Bell Keepers have a small chance of dropping the Black Witch Domino Mask and are the only source for it.
Keep in mind that this method will make the enemies stronger each time you use a bonfire ascetic. This is not recomended if you're trying to farm the Mad Warrior, either for his loot or for progressing in the Bell Keepers covenant offline.
Harvest Valley
- Use Bonfire Ascetics on the Mines bonfire to respawn the spices.
- One is located in one of the rooms in the area with all the Artificial Undead.
- One is located in the underground poison gas-filled corridor just after the bonfire.
- The Covetous Demon must be killed every time.
Other items of note:
- In the area with the first spice, there is also a Skeptic's Spice, and a Twinkling Titanite.
- Just before the Covetous Demon is a hole in the ground with a poison bug and another Skeptic's Spice.
- Various consumable souls are scattered around the area.
Undead Crypt
- Equip maximum Item Discovery and farm the Leydia Witches:
- st route: From the Undead Ditch bonfire go to the next room and then go up the ladder located near the entrance. Kill the witch, drop down (to your left) and run to the bonfire to repeat this process. On the first run try to destroy all the grave stones that will get in your way.
- nd route: From the Undead Ditch, backtrack towards the entrance of the crypt avoiding the syan knights. Soon you'll find three Leydia Witches not looking at you. Kill them the fastest way you can, and return to the bonfire either on foot or by homeward bone. This way should be more effective because you kill more witches in less time, but is also harder, because it requires you to avoid the spells that are cast on you, and the undead that will get in your way.
- Join the Company of Champions covenant for endless respawns of enemies.
- In comparisons to other methods, this can be slower because its based on luck, but it doesnt require the use of Bonfire Ascetics.
- The witches can also drop Skeptic's Spice.
- The witches can aslo drop Awestones (only if a member of Company of Champions). This becomes useful for progressing in this covenant offline.

Farming Guide
Belfry Luna
- Play offline to avoid being invaded by members of the Bellkeeper Covenant.
- Use Bonfire Ascetics on the Belfry Luna bonfire (the one after the Gargoyles) to respawn the spices, access the area with the skeptic's spices through a ladder going down located in the servant's quarters.
- One is on a railing on the second floor.
- One is on the first floor, accessed by dropping through the hole in the center of the second floor.
- One is on the top floor, on the outer wall.
- The Belfry Gargoyles must be killed every time.
Harvest Valley
- Use Bonfire Ascetics on the Mines bonfire to respawn the spices.
- One is located in one of the rooms in the area with all the sickle wielding undead.
- One is located just before the Covetous Demon in a hole in the ground with a poison bug.
- The Covetous Demon must be killed every time.
Shrine of Amana
- Use Bonfire Ascetics on the Tower of Prayer Bonfire to respawn the spices.
- One is located down a single stair and to the right. The spice is at the end of the path (in a chest).
- One is just after the first house.
- No bosses must be killed. Infinite farming
- Use the Ascetics with caution, because this is an obligatory area for finishing the game. If you're considering to get the Illusory Ring of a Conqueror or/and the Illusory Ring of the Exalted on the next playthrough, using the ascetics will make this initial area harder (and getting the rings even harder), specially because there is a place where three Lindelt Clerics and a Amana Shrine Maiden simultaneously aggro at you, despite of trying to luring them one by one.
