Adaptability
In-Game Description
Raises various attributes to ensure one's survival. Boosts agility and various resistances.
Use
- Main stat for increasing Agility.
- Increases Poison ATK bonus.
- Increases Poison Resist alongside with Attunement.
- Increases Bleed resist.
- Increases Petrify resist alongside with Vigor and Faith.
- Increases Curse resist.
- Increases Poise alongside with Endurance.
- Slightly raises HP.
Notes
- Adaptability increases Agility three times as fast as Attunement does. You get 0.75 Agility per Adaptability, and 0.25 Agility per Attunement level, until the soft cap of 110 Agility.
- Diminishing returns hit after 110 Agility is reached. Beyond that point, it becomes considerably harder to increase Agility. It takes about 30 levels in Attunement to get from 110 Agility to 111 Agility, and about 15 levels in Adaptability to get to 111 Agility.
Equipment which affects Adaptability
Item | Increase | Other Effects |
---|---|---|
Work Hook | -3 | DEX +5 |
Vessel Shield | 1 | VIG +1, END +1 INT +1, FTH +1 STR +4, DEX +4 |
Simpleton's Ring | 5 | Makes wearer invisible while rolling |

Peasant Long Gloves | 2 | INT -1 |
Peasant Trousers | 2 | INT -1 |
Handmaid's Ladle | 2 | END +1, VIT +1, DEX -1 |
Fact Gathering
Extensive testing is still required, as most of the effects of adaptability are still untested and are difficult to discern.
Agility
In-Game Description
Boosts ease of evasion and other actions.
Function
Leveling up Adaptability is the primary way to raise Agility. Attunement also provides, albeit smaller, increases to your Agility stat.
- Agility is hard capped at 120. It is possible to raise agility up to 120 by having both Adaptability and Attunement at 99.
- Increases the number of invulnerability frames when rolling.
- Speed at drinking estus flask or using items
- Rolling distance depends on your equip burden, not your agility. The lower the ratio of your current equipped burden to your equipment load the farther you roll.
Starting I-frames for each class
- The Warrior, Bandit, and Cleric have low starting Agility, so their rolls initially only have 5 frames of invincibility.
- The Sorcerer and Explorer have 88+ starting Agility, so their rolls have 9 frames of invincibly.
- The Knight, Swordsman, and Deprived have Agility in-between, and start with 8 rolling i-frames.
Effect on invincibility frames while dodging (i-frames)
Fast Roll:
Agility | iFrame Count | Seconds |
---|---|---|
85 | 5 | 0.1667 |
86 | 8 | 0.2667 |
88 | 9 | 0.3 |
92 | 10 | 0.3333 |
96 | 11 | 0.3667 |
99 | 12 | 0.4 |
105 | 13 | 0.4333 |
111 | 14 | 0.4667 |
114 | 15 | 0.5 |
116 | 16 | 0.5333 |
- i-frames begin on the very first frame of the roll animation.
- Additional testing has been performed to refine the breakpoints.12
Backstep
Agility | iFrame Count | Seconds |
---|---|---|
85 | 3 | 0.1 |
87 | 5 | 0.1667 |
91 | 6 | 0.2 |
100 | 7 | 0.2333 |
108 | 8 | 0.2667 |
113 | 9 | 0.3 |
- i-frames begin after the first four frames of the backstep animation (meaning they start on the fifth frame).
Calculating Agility
Agility is calculated as follows:
When Attunement plus 3 * Adaptability is less than or equal to 120, Agility is equal to 80 + ((Attunement + (3 * Adaptability)) / 4)
When Attunement plus 3 * Adaptability is greater than 120, Agility is equal to 110 + ((Attunement + (3 * Adaptability) - 120) / 28)
- Final Agility values are rounded down
- If Agility is calculated to be less than 85, it is set to a value of 85 regardless
- If Attunement and Adaptability are both at 99, Agility is set to a value of 120
Examples:
Attunement | Adaptability | Agility |
---|---|---|
2 | 3 | 85 |
8 | 4 | 85 |
9 | 5 | 86 |
10 | 10 | 90 |
8 | 24 | 100 |
44 | 12 | 100 |
30 | 30 | 110 |
20 | 80 | 115 |
86 | 58 | 115 |
99 | 99 | 120 |

Equipment which restore Spell Casts
Item | Restores | Other Effects |
---|---|---|
Crown of the Old Iron King | 20% (rounded up) every 2 minutes (with or without Vendrick's Blessing) |
Note: Saint's Hood, Hexer's Hood and Northern Ritual Band all work in the same way. Spell uses are being multiplied by 1.1 (1.2/1.3 for the +1/+2 versions of the ring respectively) and then rounded up. For example, having a spell with only one use, the number will increase from 1 to 1.1, then be rounded up to 2, resulting in two spell uses.
If you combine one of the hoods with the Northern Ritual Band, the spell use percentage will stack additively (10% + 10% = 20%, or 30%/40% for the +1/+2 versions of the ring). This means that, upon using both the standard version of the ring and one of the hoods, a spell with one use will increase its number from 1 to 1.2, then be rounded up to 2, resulting in two spell uses. However, using both on a spell with six uses, it will increase from 6 to 7.2, then be rounded up to 8, resulting in eight spell uses.
Spell Casts
Depending on the spell, it may start with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, or 30 casts at base Attunement.
The table below shows how many casts become available with increased Attunement ("-" is used to indicate no increase from previous cast amount).

Casting Speed
Description
Speed at which spells can be cast.
Can be shortened with attunement.1
Influence of Attributes on Casting Speed
- Casting speed is influenced by Attunement, Faith and Intelligence
- Attunement has two times bigger influence on Casting Speed than Faith and Intelligence
- Casting Speed rises by 2 until it is 115. Casting speed will increase for every 2 points in Attunement, or 4 points in Faith or Intelligence.
- E.g. 2ATN = 1ATN+2FTH = 1ATN+2INT = 1ATN+1FTH+1INT = 2INT+2FTH = 1FTH+3INT = 3FTH+1INT
- Between 115 and 126 Casting Speed rises by 1 for same amount as above.
- From 126 it needs two times more than above to rise by 1. e.g. 4ATN = 8INT = 8FTH = 4INT +4FTH
- Max Casting Speed is 323 with 99 ATN/INT/FTH, Clear Bluestone Ring +2 , Black Hood and the Lion Mage set

Endurance
In-Game Description
An attribute that determines your overall stamina.
Use
- Increases Stamina.
- One of 4 stats that increase Physical DEF.
- Increases Poise alongside with Adaptability.
- Slightly raises HP.

Interaction with Adaptability
Raising the lower of these two stats will result in natural Poise increase. For example, if you have 10 Adaptability plus 10 Endurance, adding 1 point to Endurance will not increase your Natural Poise. On the other hand, if you have 11 points of Adaptability plus 10 points of Endurance, adding 1 more point to Endurance will increase your Poise.
At 1 Endurance plus Adaptability, you will have 0.3 Natural Poise. Natural Poise seems to have two soft caps- one at 30 END+ADP, and another at 50 END+ADP.

31 to 50 | +0.2 |

Fire Attack Bonus
Abbreviated as Fire BNS in-game.
Description
Boosts the power of fire attacks.1
Use
Determines how much extra damage you do with fire scaling weapons and pyromancies.
Notes
- The base Fire BNS, with 0 INT and 0 FTH is 50.
- Increases once with any 2 points in Intelligence and Faith, so either 1 INT + 1 FTH or 2 INT or 2 FTH. This effectively means it scales with the total or average.
- For example, 5 INT + 55 FTH, 30 INT + 30 FTH, and 55 INT + 5 FTH all result in 147 Fire Bonus.
- 60 combined Intelligence and Faith is the soft cap.
- This value is multiplied by the weapon or spell tool's fire scaling factor, then added to the attack rating along with any other scaling.

New Player Info
Health doesn't naturally regenerate in Dark Souls 2. Health is generally restored by the use of items, such as the Estus Flask. Health regeneration is also granted by some equipment and spells.
You may have noticed that, after dying a few times, portions of your maximum health bar begin to become inaccessible to you. This will continue each time you die until half of your maximum health is locked. You may use a Human Effigy from your inventory to restore your health bar to its maximum size. In addition, there is an item that decreases the total percentage of your health bar that can become locked to 25%, rather than 50% (Ring of Binding).
Fulfilling your duties as a summoned phantom will also restore your humanity, and therefore your health bar.

Note: With the cummulative leveling cost it is possible to estimate the level range you encounter online, e.g.: A character at level 150 with a soul memory of 2.4 million and 200.000 soul on hand lost or spend round about 650.000 soul on merchants. At current tier 34 (less than 2.5 millon souls) the maximum level of a red invader is round about 170-180.
Notes
- The listed costs are the required souls you see in-game, at that level, in order to level up and reach the next level. See individual starting classes for total souls requirements.
- To determine the level of a PvP opponent based on the amount of souls they drop, consult the PvP Soul Value page.
- Unlike in Dark Souls 1, Soul Level is not used for matchmaking. Matchmaking is determined by Soul Memory and the item used instead. See Online Matchmaking for more details.
- The souls requirement for each level increases steadily until level 199 at which point it is "soft capped". There is an enormous jump between levels 199 and 249. After level 250 the soul requirement for each level increases slowly until max level.

Physical DEF
Description
Level of defense against physical attacks1
Uses
- Defense modifier on armors.
- Reduces the damage taken from physical attacks by around 0.2 per point. Will never reach 100% damage reduction.
Influence of Attributes on Physical DEF
- Endurance, Vitality, Strength and Dexterity equally influence Physical DEF.
- Every 4 points put in those stats (e.g. 1END, 1VIT, 2 STR) will add to Physical DEF.
- Has the most scaling between 84 and 160 points in those stats and gives very little return after 200 levels

In-Game Description
Souls that once dwelled within the flesh will always remain in memory.
Could this be a blessing? Or a curse?
General Information
The total accumulation of all your souls that you have collected so far. This is displayed in the top right of your Player Status screen.
It is used for matchmaking purposes, where players within a certain Soul Memory range of each other can be paired.
For more information, consult the Online Matchmaking and co-op pages.
Souls
Use
Souls are the currency in Dark Souls II.
They can be used to gain levels by speaking with the Emerald Herald in Majula, and to buy items and services from various merchants.
Availability
- Souls can be obtained in 'loose form' by killing enemies. These are added to the current total in the bottom right of the HUD.
- The number of Souls an enemy drops in loose form depends on the current Bonfire Intensity level.
- Souls in 'solid form' can be collected as treasure or by killing Bosses.
- Refer to the Soul Farming page for guidance on accumulating souls faster.
- Souls gained can be increased by wearing certain pieces equipment. See the chart below.

Strength
In-Game Description
Attribute required to wield heavy, powerful weapons. Also boosts attack.
Use
- Many pieces of equipment have a Strength level requirement. Two-handing a weapon or shield halves the Strength level required to use it.
- Increases Physical ATK: Strength, which modifies damage on weapons with Strength scaling.
- See this spreadsheet for how ATK bonuses are converted to damage for each weapon's scaling.
- One of 4 stats that increase Physical DEF.
- Slightly raises HP.
Strength Requirements
Equipments listed here are only the ones that needs more than 3 points of Strength, because the lowest Strength you can get is 3 (by choosing Sorcerer as a starting class). Remember that this list is only the Strength requirement for one-handing an equipment, so you can also two-hand it to wield with lower Strength.
Bows and Greatbows are always used in two hands, and so they have been listed with half the Strength requirement.

Vigor
In-Game Description
An attribute that determines HP.
Use
- Main stat that increases max HP.
- One of 2 stats that increase Petrify Resist.

Notes
- Early in the game, increasing your Vigor provides much more survivability than increasing Vitality to wear heavy armor. However at high armor upgrade levels, and high HP levels, Vitality can surpass Vigor.
- The HP increase after 50 Vigor is only slightly higher than the extra points you get from increasing any other attribute.
Vitality
In-Game Description
An attribute that determines your maximum equipment load.
Use
- Increases Equipment Load.
- One of 4 stats that Increase Physical DEF.
- Increases Poison Resist alongside with Adaptability.
- Slightly raises HP.
The primary effect of Vitality is to increase your Equipment Load. A high value for Equipment Load will allow you to move quickly while using heavy weapons and armors.
The HP granted by Vigor will provide more survivability than Vitality when you are using non-upgraded armors, but Vitality becomes a lot more valuable when you have access to fully upgraded heavy armors. In addition to increasing your ability to survive hits, heavy armor also provides Poise.
